Dr. Gary Quinlivan to present “Free Trade vs. Fair Trade” lecture

Dr. Gary Quinlivan, H’23, dean emeritus and professor emeritus of the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government at Saint Vincent College, will present a lecture titled “Free Trade vs. Fair Trade” on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fred M. Rogers Center on campus.
 
“This lecture provides a productivity comparison of countries with varying degrees of free- and fair-trade policies,” Quinlivan said.
 
The lecture will focus on six possible objectives in utilizing tariffs, Quinlivan added, including a manufacturing renaissance, improved affordability, reducing the deficit on the balance of trade (i.e., current account), increased revenues for the U.S. Treasury, containing China’s power and economic growth, and strengthening the national defense of the United States.
 
Interested attendees must register online. Parking will be available in Parking Lot A of the Rogers Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. There is no fee for admittance.
 
Quinlivan has co-edited or co-authored seven books and six monographs. He has also written numerous articles in the areas of international trade, public finance and international finance.
 
Quinlivan earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the State University of New York College at Geneseo and later earned a doctorate in economics from the State University of New York at Albany with PhD fields in international trade, international finance and monetary theory.
 
From August 1981 to December 2023, Quinlivan taught multiple economics classes at Saint Vincent College. In 1990, he and T. William Boxx cofounded the nationally recognized Center for Economic and Political Thought, housed in the McKenna School.
 
From 1990 to 2001, Quinlivan served as chair of the Economics Department and later the Politics Department. He was the founding dean of the McKenna School from June 2001 to June 2022.
 
Quinlivan was one of the key administrators dedicated to enhancing the College’s global academic links, traveling to China 51 times and negotiating academic affiliations between Saint Vincent College and some of the premier universities in China and Turkey. He also is the co-founder of the Ballroom Dance and Gilbert and Sullivan clubs at Saint Vincent.
 
Outside of the College, Quinlivan served as an adjunct faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University, having taught international trade, international monetary theory and monetary theory. He was a Fulbright Scholar from 1988-1989 at Shandong University in China.
